Many of the help threads are from folks (especially n00bs) who have gotten themselves into a jam with their ratio FOR WHATEVER REASON. I was in this predicament when I first signed on due to my hair-brained idea to DL a 4.7GB movie, which was an old torrent with dozens of seeds and almost no leechers.
I found myself at 0.5nn, having only uploaded a few hundred MB and almost no upload traffic happening.
Here are some things I found while searching feverishly through posts for help. Many of them I utilized to some extent, and recovered just fine in about 4-6 days.
Keep in mind: You can not recover from bad ratio quickly unless you have really high UL bandwidth and/or DONATE. It takes time and patience for most folks.
1. Don't do what I did (Duh! Ok, moving on...)
2. Seed everything you DL until the tracker drops the torrent or you run out of disk space and HAVE to remove it (no less than 48 hours!). I am serious about this. You will be amazed when somebody happens to DL that same torrent a few days later and all of a sudden you have another 400MB ULed on it because you were one of 5 remaining seeds.
3. Don't be over eager. Start with small (<700MB), popular torrents until you have a 7-10GB pad in your ratio. Then go to larger (<4GB) popular torrents until you have a 20-30GB pad. Then you can start DLing huge, slow or old torrents as long as you can make up the ratio with other torrents.
4. Have patience. Limit your global DL speed to something equal to or less than your UL speed. (this is a setting in your client) This way your ratio may actually climb as you DL. Also, you can let a torrent DL at full speed until you have about 10% of it, then limit it's DL speed to something very small like 5K. Remember: This is not about DLing the file fast; it's about DLing it and sharing it with everyone else so that the burden of bandwidth is shared by all.
5. Don't go after an entire torrent all at once, DL a few small pieces of high traffic torrents and let those little pieces seed for a while. Then go get the rest of the torrent once you have beefed up your ratio a bit. You can do this on hot torrents JUST to beef up your ratio even if you don't want the torrent.
Ahhh, so which torrents are popular? Well, that takes some investigation and a little luck. (Below is just what I found to be the case. I haven't yet ventured into most games, apps or XXX. Maybe some replies can shed more light on this part.)
I found the following to hold water:
o Major apps aren't always very high bandwidth, but can run for weeks before tapering off.
o TV show eps are very hot for a few hours to a couple days, depending on the series.
o Movies are pretty hot for a few days and taper off slowly for a week or more.
o Full season TV series are pretty hot for a couple weeks or so.
In general, browse the torrent list and pay attention when the torrent was posted, the number of seeds and leechers, and the number of times the torrent was snatched. There's a lot of behavior you can derive from these four pieces of information. |
